October is designated as National Bullying Prevention Month and to join the cause Sinergia, who for 33 years has provided service and support to individuals with disabilities and their families, will be promoting several events to build awareness of the seriousness of bullying.
About 160,000 children do not attend school because of the negative affects they suffer from bullying.
We at Sinergia have witnessed first hand the destructive effects of bullying.
Our Parent Center has received many referrals of children with disabilities who have been victimized, and unfortunately nationwide figures show that kids with disabilities suffer at an increased rate from this problem.
Sinergia will be conducting a Bullying Prevention Forum for parents and children, and participants from our Day Habilitation Program will also have skits and art sessions on that day. We will encourage people to wear orange and design tee shirts for parents and children.
Sinergia will contact other organizations and schools in East Harlem to encourage them to join us in activities to create awareness and develop prevention strategies.
Sinergia Executive Director Myrta Cuadra-Lash is available for interviews (in both Spanish and English) on how we can help children that are being affected by bullying, and we can also arrange for parents and children to speak to reporters as well.
